About this map

Mississippi River bluffs dominate this landscape along the Illinois and Missouri border, where the floodplain is divided into a complex network of islands and sloughs. High ground above the bottomlands is dotted with numerous rural schools, including the O'Leary School, Lumber School, and The Grant School, reflecting a densely settled agrarian society in the early twentieth century. The river itself is punctuated by large landforms like Fort Chartres Island and Beagles Island, which are separated from the mainland by narrow passages such as Jawbone Slough.
