About this map

The San Fernando Valley meets the northern slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains in this late 1920s survey of Los Angeles County. The transition from the alluvial plain of the Los Angeles River to the steep canyons of the south reflects the early urban expansion of the era, where agricultural lands and newly surveyed residential blocks like Owensmouth and Reseda began to emerge along the Southern Pacific railroad line. At the base of the foothills, Ventura Boulevard serves as a primary east-west artery through Encino.
