Lolo National Forest encompasses the entirety of this mountainous landscape in Sanders County, defined by the drainage systems feeding into the Thompson River. The high point of the region is Richards Peak, situated centrally among a network of drainages including Young Cr and Beatrice Cr. The topography transitions from high ridges like McCully Ridge to the relatively level open spaces of Indian Prairie and Big Prairie, which provide notable breaks in the heavy timber. The southeastern corner of the sheet is marked by the dramatic descent into Hell-Roaring Canyon. Access to these remote reaches is maintained via a sparse network of forest routes, such as Fishtrap Creek Rd and Meadow Creek Rd, tracing the paths of the many tributaries like Fishtrap Cr and Meadow Cr that carve through the forest.
