Richards Peak serves as the focal point for this section of the Lolo National Forest, where the high terrain of the Cabinet Mountains drops away toward the river valley. The landscape is defined by a dense network of watercourses, including Meadow Creek and Fishtrap Creek, that drain into the Thompson River along the eastern edge. This river corridor has historically served as the primary transit route through the area, as seen in the alignment of State Hwy 556 and the Thompson River Co Rd.
