About this map

The Moses E Levy Grant and Arredondo Grant boundaries define much of the land ownership patterns in this central Florida landscape, where dense hammocks and prairies meet expansive wetlands. The Seaboard Coast Line Railroad provides a primary east-west axis, connecting small communities like Rochelle, Phifer, and Grove Park. This era of the late twentieth century shows a landscape transitioning between agricultural roots and preserved natural spaces, evidenced by the proximity of Magnesia Springs and the sprawling Watson Prairie. Large bodies of water including Newnans Lake, Orange Lake, and Lochloosa Lake anchor the corners of the map, connected by the meandering River Styx and Prairie Creek. Local history is preserved in several rural burial grounds such as St Pauls Cem and Coleman Cem, along with the Third Bethel Ch, which served these dispersed settlements.
