The Challis National Forest landscape in Custer County is defined by its complex drainage systems and prominent ridgelines. Waterways such as Rock Creek, Loon Creek, and Warm Spring Creek carve through the high elevations, illustrating a high-altitude wilderness before any modern industrial footprint. To the east, the terrain rises into Bridge Creek Ridge and Hot Creek Ridge, which separate the primary watersheds. The boundary between Lemhi and Custer counties cuts through the western and southeastern corners, marking jurisdictional lines in a region shaped more by hydrology than human settlement. The 2017 survey shows a network of creeks including Cold Creek and Gold Creek, providing a detailed look at the pristine drainage patterns of the Salmon River Mountains.
