Rock Lake dominates this Whitman County landscape, carving a deep corridor through the volcanic basalt terrain of eastern Washington. The small settlement of Lavista sits at the southwestern edge of the water, near the small Lavista Lake and Slaughter Pen Bay. This area is defined by a complex drainage system of smaller basins and seasonal pools, including Alkali Lake, Tule Lake, and Miller Pond, which are characteristic of the Channeled Scablands.
