Rowan and the surrounding coastal plains of Bladen County are defined by a complex network of wetlands and riverine systems. The Black River winds through the eastern portion of the landscape, joined by tributaries such as Colly Cr and Rowan Cr. This area is notable for its numerous "bays"—elliptical depressions common to the Carolinas—including Big Bay, Tussock Bay, and Dismal Bay.
