About this map

Luis Maria Baca No 4 defines the northern reaches of this high-altitude landscape, where the shifting sands of the Great Sand Dunes National Monument meet the sprawling ranchlands of the San Luis Valley. This late-1960s perspective reveals an arid environment managed through dispersed water points, including the Sand Camp Flowing Well, the Sand Pasture Windmill, and numerous unnamed flowing wells scattered across the terrain. Along the southern edge, the Saguache and Alamosa County line crosses the dunes near Big Spring Creek and Indian Spring. The network of Jeep Trails provides the primary access through this complex topography, marking the intersection of public conservation land and historic private land grants such as the Grant Boundary.
