Lake Meredith dominates this section of the Texas Panhandle, filling the valley where the Canadian River was impounded to create the reservoir within the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. The landscape is defined by deep incisions in the high plains, including Bugbee Canyon, North Canyon, and Spring Canyon. These canyons and the fingers of the lake create a complex shoreline that separates the primary residential centers of Sanford and Fritch.
