The Santa Ynez River flows across the northern reaches of this coastal range landscape, carving the Lompoc Valley between the Purisima Hills and the Santa Rita Hills. The terrain is defined by a dense network of steep canyons and drainages, including Long Canyon and the Cañada de la Viña, which descend from the Santa Rosa Hills. These landforms transition south into the higher elevations of the Santa Ynez Mountains.
