About this map

Sheriffs Mesa and the surrounding high desert terrain define this landscape at the border of Pima and Santa Cruz counties. The area is marked by a complex network of ephemeral drainage systems including Batamote Wash, Sopori Wash, and Saucito Wash, which historically dictated the placement of early ranching infrastructure. Isolated homesteads and cattle operations such as the Kx Ranch and Santa Lucia Ranch appear alongside evidence of essential water management, ranging from the Sardina Dam to numerous livestock tanks like Horse Pasture Tank and Pe‘asco Tank. A significant local landmark, the Old Sopori School, stands along the route leading toward the Cerro Colorado Mts. The southern portion of the map transitions into the Coronado National Forest, where the topography rises sharply toward Diablo Mountain and the Tumacacori Mountains.
