Savage and the neighboring industrial site of Knife River occupy the high ground just west of the meandering Yellowstone River in Richland County. The landscape is defined by the sophisticated irrigation network of the Main Canal, which cuts across the western terraces to support the local agriculture. To the east, the river is split by a complex series of landforms including Crittenden Island, Elk Island, and Breakneck Island, creating a braided waterway characterized by side channels like Beef Slough.
