Fort Peck Lake defines the northern reaches of this landscape along the border of Phillips and Garfield counties. The terrain is characterized by a complex network of drainages that feed toward the reservoir, including the primary course of Sawmill Cr and its tributaries, N Sawmill Cr and S Sawmill Cr. Further east, the deeply carved paths of Big Coulee Cr and Seven Blackfoot Cr cut through the high plains. Human activity in this rural section of Montana is sparse, centered primarily around Brusett Rd at the southern edge, which provides the main overland access through the townships of Garfield County. This survey provides a clear view of the hydraulic relationship between the local creek systems and the vast reservoir created by the damming of the Missouri River.
