Kaniksu National Forest and Kootenai National Forest converge across this landscape, centered on the high peaks of the Cabinet Mountains during the mid-1960s. The topography is dominated by massive summits including Sawtooth Mountain, Spar Peak, and Mount Vernon, which are separated by a complex network of drainages like Poorman Creek and Ross Creek.

Evidence of local resource use is visible at the isolated Mine located in the southern reaches near Blue Creek. Human activity is otherwise largely confined to the Ross Creek Picnic Area and a designated Pack Trail that follows the South Fork through the center of the quadrangle. The map also records the boundary line between Lincoln and Sanders counties as it traverses the high ridges between Middle Mountain and Ross Point.
