About this map

Schenevus and Worcester occupy the narrow valley floor where the Delaware and Hudson railroad follows the winding course of Schenevus Creek. This wartime survey, conducted by the War Department and Corps of Engineers, reveals a landscape of upland dairy farms and rural districts defined by a series of numbered schoolhouses, such as School No 11 and School No 12, which served as anchors for the local community. The topography is dominated by steep ridges like Hooker Mtn, where the Hooker 2 Lookout Tower provided a high vantage point for fire detection.
