Medicine Bow National Forest dominates the southern portion of this high-altitude landscape, where the boundary between Converse and Albany counties cuts across the high mountain terrain. The topography is defined by significant elevation changes, ranging from the heights of School Section Mtn and the Sierra Madre range to deep drainages like La Bonte Canyon and Big Bear Canyon. Historical movement through this area is marked by named routes such as Fetterman Rd and Access Rd, which navigate around features like Old Maids Draw and Downey Park. The hydrologic network is complex, feeding into the Wagonhound Reservoir via Wagon Hound Cr, while other drainages like W Fork La-Bonte Cr and Corduroy Cr carve through the timbered slopes. Notable gaps in the ridges, including Latham Pass and Chamberlain Pass, indicate the natural corridors used to traverse this part of the Laramie Mountains.
