Big Thicket National Preserve dominates the northern half of this Polk County landscape, where protected woodlands are defined by a complex network of watercourses and recreational paths. Primary drainages like Big Sandy Creek and Menard Creek wind through the terrain, joined by smaller tributaries such as Double Branch and Camp Branch. The southern portion of the quadrangle transitions into a more settled pattern, anchored by the rural communities of Segno and Holly Grove. Local history is anchored by the Davis Cemetery north of the main preserve boundary, while the area's contemporary role as a gateway to nature is evidenced by the Big Sandy Horse Trail and Beaver Slide Trail. This 2019 survey documents the enduring interface between deep East Texas timberlands and the small settlements established along rural routes like FM 943 and FM 2798.
