1954 Map of Shasta

USGS Topo · Published 1958

About this map

The massive volcanic peak of Mt Shasta dominates this mid-century survey, its slopes defined by a system of glaciers including the Whitney Glacier and Hotlum Glacier. To the south, the timber-dependent community of McCloud is shown with its McCloud River rail connections, a Sawmill, and a local Landing Field. High-altitude recreation and mountaineering history are evident at the Shasta Alpine Lodge, reached via the Everitt Memorial Highway. The landscape is a network of ridges and meadows, such as Red Fir Ridge and Harts Meadow, where the Shasta National Forest manages the vast timber and watershed resources. Historical transit corridors like Military Pass and the Ash Creek Junction siding reflect the region's long-standing importance as a passage through the northern California mountains.
