Sheepshead is situated at the northwestern edge of the expansive Smoke Creek Desert in this high-desert Nevada landscape. The area is defined by its critical water sources, including Sheepshead Spring, Mocho Spring, and Buckbrush Spring, which historically supported movement through this arid basin. Transport across the terrain is primarily facilitated by Smoke Creek Rd, which winds near the banks of Lower Smoke Creek.

The western topography rises into a series of drainages, most notably Maria Canyon, Black Diamond Canyon, and Willow Canyon. These canyons descend toward the desert floor, where the environment transitions into more open features like Buckboard Field. The mapping of these remote springs and named canyons provides a valuable record of the geographic points of interest within Washoe County’s interior during the early 21st century.
