Sierra Larga rises as the central topographic feature in this arid landscape of central New Mexico. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevations including the distinct plateau of Mesa Redonda and the high summit of Black Mesa to the northwest. Life in this environment centers on water management, evidenced by the numerous tanks scattered across the draws and canyons. These vital water points, such as Adolpho Tank, Upper Marr Tank, and Kessler Tank, supported ranching operations throughout the high desert.
