Mining operations and remote forest infrastructure define this section of the Nez Perce National Forest in the mid-1990s. The landscape is a corridor of activity concentrated along the Gospel Hump Wilderness boundary, where several historic extraction sites such as the Hematite Mine, Goldbug Mine, and Union Group Mines are documented. These sites, along with the Gold Master Mine and Eutopia Mine, trace a path of mineral exploration across the high ridges.
