The Cape Fear River winds through this coastal plain landscape, defining a network of historic river access points that once anchored the local economy. Small riverfront settlements and named landings including Lock Landing, Whitehall Landing, and Coal Mine Landing speak to a time when the waterway was a primary artery for transport and commerce. Adjacent to the river, the unique Carolina Bay formations are prominently visible, including the protected waters of Singletary Lake within the Singletary Lake State Park. These elliptical depressions, such as Dog Bay, Hog Bay, and Thousand Acres Bay, create a distinctive geomorphology that dominates the eastern half of the survey.
