Tongass National Forest dominates this coastal landscape, where the waters of the Gulf of Alaska reach deep into the interior through Mitchell Bay and Kanalku Bay. The geography is defined by a dense network of islands and points, including Deception Island, Woodchoppers Island, and the curiously named South America Island. These landforms create complex passages and narrow channels, such as those near Passage Point and Ponte Point, which were vital for maritime navigation through the archipelago.
