The low-lying wetlands of Concordia Parish and across the state line into Mississippi are defined by the winding course of Bayou Cocodrie and the Mississippi River. In the early 1980s, this landscape was a complex mosaic of conservation efforts and energy extraction. Extensive oil operations like the Middle Bayou Cocodrie Oil Field and the Slocum Oil Field are interspersed with the protected lands of the Red River State Wildlife Management Area.
