Smithland serves as the central point of this northeast Texas landscape, situated at the junction of several county roads and FM 49. The surrounding terrain is characterized by a complex network of waterways that eventually feed into the expansive Caddo Lake at the bottom of the map. Tracing the drainages reveals numerous named sloughs and chutes, including Patterson Slough, Gravier Slough, and Carters Chute, which wind through the lowlands near Goat Island.
