Snake Butte and the adjacent Twin Buttes anchor this high-plains landscape along the border of Custer and Powder River Counties. The terrain is defined by a dense network of intermittent watercourses, including Little Corral Cr, Butte Cr, and Foster Cr, which carve through the land south of Chimney Butte. These drainage patterns reflect the semi-arid character of southeastern Montana, where life and travel are dictated by the presence of seasonal water and the high ground of the local buttes.
