The Columbia National Wildlife Refuge dominates the landscape of Grant and Adams counties, protecting a vast network of wetlands and coulee formations. This 2023 survey illustrates the complex water management system central to the region, including the Potholes Reservoir and the Potholes Canal. The topography is defined by basalt depressions that hold numerous distinct water bodies such as Soda Lake, Herman Lake, and the cluster of Sage Lakes.
