Water infrastructure and complex topography define this portion of the Diablo Range at the edge of the San Joaquin Valley. The landscape is bisected by major engineering projects, including the Governor Edmund G Brown California Aqueduct, the Delta-Mendota Canal, and the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct, which cut through the foothills to transport water across the state. In the lower elevations, a network of irrigation laterals such as Lateral Four N and Lateral Six N support the agriculture near the settlement of Solyo.
