Atlantic Mine and Champion Mine anchor the copper-country landscape of the Keweenaw Peninsula, where the industrial legacy of Michigan's Upper Peninsula is etched into the modern topography. The communities of South Range, Trimountain, and Painesdale are clustered along the Bill Nicholls Route, a corridor that follows the historic path of the Copper Range Railroad. These settlements, often founded as company towns, are surrounded by the scars and structural remnants of large-scale extraction, including the site of Baltic and the high point at Tolonen Hill. The surrounding wilderness is defined by the drainage of the Salmon Trout River and Pilgrim River, alongside numerous small kettle lakes like Lake Perrault and Elevenmile Lake. Local genealogy is well-represented by the Atlantic Mine Cem and Mountain View Cem, which serve as quiet markers of the generations that worked these northern Michigan ore bodies.
