Malmstrom Air Force Base anchors the northern reaches of this landscape, where the urban grid of Great Falls meets the vast benchlands of Gibson Flats. The area is defined by a series of deep coulees, including Walker Coulee and Spring Coulee, which cut through the plateau toward the winding drainage of Sand Coulee Creek. This drainage corridor served as a primary artery for early industrial development, evidenced by the string of mining-related settlements such as Sand Coulee, Tracy, and the uniquely named Number Seven.
