The Vermilion River and its various forks dictate the geography of this rural Livingston County landscape, winding past the south side of Pontiac and through the small settlements of McDowell and Lodemia. The river's path is joined by the North Fork Vermilion River and South Fork Vermilion River in the eastern half of the quadrangle, while Hickory Cr drains the southwestern fields near Weston. This map illustrates a transition between the established city grid of Fairbury in the southeast and the dispersed farmsteads and rural crossroads to the north.
