The dramatic twin peaks of East Spanish Peak and West Spanish Peak anchor the western skyline of this survey, defining a landscape of deep canyons and growing industrial outposts. By the late 1890s, the eastern foothills had become a critical hub for coal extraction and transport, centered on the bustling rail junction of Trinidad. The map documents a dense network of company towns and shipping points along the Denver and Rio Grande R.R. Trinidad Line, including Ludlow, Aguilar, and Hastings.

Down in the river valleys, older agricultural and social foundations are evident in the Spanish plazas, such as Trujillo Plaza and Martinez Plaza, which contrast with the newer industrial settlements of Sopris and Starkville.
