The Niobrara River carves through the heart of this Boyd County and Holt County borderland, anchored by the Spencer Dam and its associated Gaging Station. To the north, the town of Spencer sits as a regional hub, served by the Chicago and North Western railroad which runs alongside Ponca Creek. The landscape is a network of rural townships including Spencer, Bristow, and Morton, where numerous small country schools like School No 6 and School No 14 once supported local farm families.
