The geography transitions sharply from the peaks of the Spruce Mountain Ridge down into the flat expanses of Clover Valley and Independence Valley. To the east, numerous named water sources such as Latham Spring and Basco Spring suggest the critical importance of reliable water for both mining operations and ranching, evidenced by the Shearing Corral located near the valley floor. Researchers can trace a labyrinth of secondary roads and a Jeep Trail that provided access to remote claims like the Monarch Mine.
