Steamboat Butte rises above the high plains of central Montana, marking a landscape defined by seasonal drainages and a network of rural routes. The boundary between Musselshell Co and Yellowstone Co bisects the area, where the terrain is carved by the Hawk Cr system and its various tributaries, including Dry Fork Hawk Cr and Buffalo Cr. Further south, Hibbard Cr and Antelope Cr drain the watershed toward the Yellowstone River basin.
