Brier Creek and its many tributaries, including Beaver Dam Creek, Walnut Branch, and McBean Creek, define the hydrologic landscape south of Augusta in the early 21st century. This area is characterized by several significant impoundments, most notably Storys Millpond and its associated Storys Millpond Dam, as well as Shaw Lake and Goldberg Pond. The rural character is punctuated by several small family and historic burial sites, such as the Rachael Tucker Cemetery, Gresham Cemetery, and Bines Slave Cemetery, which provide critical touchstones for local genealogists.
