Custer National Forest lands dominate the northern landscape of this region on the border of Rosebud and Big Horn counties. The terrain is defined by a complex network of drainage systems, including the headwaters of Stroud Creek and the meandering path of Hanging Woman Creek. Stock raising and ranching history are evident through named water improvements such as Woodard Reservoir, Snyder Reservoir, and Haywood Reservoir, along with numerous springs like Rim Rock Spring and Dutchman Spring.
