About this map

The Delaware Water Gap defines the eastern edge of this landscape, where the Delaware River cuts through the Kittatinny Mountains. To the west, the Twin Cities of Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg serve as a regional hub of education and industry, home to the State Teachers College and a cluster of manufacturing sites including Monroe Silk Mills and Mammoth Hosiery Mills. The surrounding terrain is shaped by a series of parallel ridges and valleys, such as Godfrey Ridge and Cherry Valley, which dictated the routes of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western and the Central Railroad of New Jersey. Further south, the landscape shifts toward the slate belt, where industrial activity is marked by a Slate Quarry near Bangor and the Portland Sand & Gravel Co near Johnsonville. Numerous rural schools like Bell School and Wolf School No 1 are scattered throughout the valleys, reflecting the area's established early-20th-century settlement pattern.
