Helena National Forest lands dominate this mountainous landscape in Montana, where the historic Flathead Indian Trail winds across high elevations. The area is defined by a dense network of drainages, including the headwaters of Sulphur Bar Creek and the long descent of Greyson Creek toward the southwest. Evidence of resource extraction appears in several mines scattered along the steep slopes and within the deep cuts of Bear Gulch and Blacktail Gulch. Central to the topography is Munding Flat, a notable break in the elevation near the prominent peak of Black Butte. Along the eastern edge, Windy Ridge provides a natural barrier overlooking Russell Fork and the more open terrain of Grassy Mountain. This survey captures the region just after the turn of the millennium, documenting the forest service roads and trails that serve this section of the Big Belt Mountains.
