Chickasaw National Recreation Area anchors the southern portion of this landscape, where the waters of Travertine Cr flow through a series of cascades including Little Niagara Falls, Bear Falls, and Sycamore Falls. The city of Sulphur is situated at the gateway to these mineral springs, with its residential grid extending north toward the Sulphur Municipal Airport. This 2016 survey documents a region defined by complex water management, evidenced by numerous upstream reservoirs like Rock Creek Site 12 Reservoir and Mill Creek Watershed 5 Reservoir. Genealogy researchers will find several well-preserved burial sites across the terrain, from the Oaklawn Cem near the city center to the Shirley Family Cem and the rural Salem Presbyterian Cem near the northern settlement of Oak Grove.
