Sweet Grass stands at the northernmost edge of this Montana landscape, where the international border meets the Canadian province of Alberta. This 2017 survey details the infrastructure of the border crossing, including the Ross International Airport and the complex street grid of Sunburst to the south. The terrain is defined by a series of north-south drainage systems known as coulees, most notably Halfway Coulee, Wolf Coulee, and Sunburst Coulee. These features underscore the region's semi-arid character and the way historical land use followed the natural contours of the high plains. A distinct geological formation, Jerusalem Rocks and the nearby Little Jerusalem, rise above the surrounding flats, providing a sense of the area's unique vertical relief alongside the interstate and rail corridors that dominate the modern transit landscape.
