About this map

Vandenberg Air Force Base dominates the northern reaches of this coastal survey, where a complex grid of military infrastructure including Airfield Rd and numerous state-named avenues meets the Pacific shoreline. The landscape transitions from the residential and operational zones of the base into the natural drainage systems of Burton Mesa and Cañada Tortuga. To the south, the Santa Ynez River carves through the Lompoc Valley, creating a wide alluvial plain that separates the military installations from the elevated Santa Ynez Mountains. Small railroad-adjacent settlements such as Surf, Baroda, and La Salle trace the historic transit corridor along the coast and river, while deep ravines like Lompoc Canyon and Sloans Canyon define the southern topography.
