The Talkeetna Mountains dominate this high-elevation landscape, where the interplay of ice and drainage defines the terrain. The northern reaches are characterized by the Talkeetna Glacier and the Chickaloon Glacier, which feed into a network of alpine waterways. As these glacial masses recede or shift, they contribute to the flow of the Chickaloon River in the southeast and Moss Cr in the south. This 2016 survey illustrates a purely wilderness environment within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, devoid of road infrastructure or permanent settlements. The map provides a detailed view of the natural hydrology and contour lines that shape one of the state's most formidable mountain ranges during the early 21st century.
