Hogup Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape in Box Elder County, where isolated summits rise sharply from the Great Salt Lake Desert floor. The area is defined by its verticality, anchored by the 2017 survey of Tangent Peak and Scorpio Peak. Human presence is minimal, etched into the terrain by a sparse network of unpaved tracks such as Middle Pass Rd and Big Pass Rd, which follow the natural contours of the mountain passes. The presence of Shelter Mountain Pass and the nearby Shelter Mtn suggests the strategic importance of these rare navigable routes through the high ridges. To the east, the drainage of Big Wash marks a significant geological feature in an otherwise arid environment, illustrating the water-sculpted nature of this high-elevation Great Basin environment.
