The Cape Fear River snakes through the northeastern corner of this coastal plain landscape, defining the northern limits of Tar Heel and White Oak. The terrain is dominated by a complex network of wetlands and bays, such as Tenmile Swamp and Jackson Swamp, which are crisscrossed by historical water-management features like the Allen Pocket Canal and Big Swamp Canal. These canals reflect a long history of attempting to drain the fertile but saturated soils for agricultural use.
