A significant portion of the southwestern quadrant is dedicated to the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge, preserving the bottomland habitat. The hydrology of the area is exceptionally detailed, featuring the Roundaway Bayou, Bear Lake, and the curiously named Despair Lake and Bayou Despair.
