1996 Map of The Trident

USGS Topo · Published 1998

About this map

The Trident, a prominent mountain plateau, dominates the eastern topography where the borders of Yellowstone National Park and the Teton Wilderness meet. This 1996 survey illustrates a remote wilderness landscape defined by the winding course of the Yellowstone River and its confluence with Thorofare Creek. The convergence of these waters near Bridger Lake served as a critical node for backcountry travel, marked by the presence of a ford and the remote outpost at Thorofare. Significant pack trails, including the Thorofare Trail and Buffalo Trail, trace the valley floors and ridges, providing a record of established travel routes through the Teton National Forest before modern developments. The map provides clear evidence of the complex drainage systems formed by Mountain Creek, Howell Creek, and Coyote Creek as they descend from the high escarpment.
