Santiam Highway and Mc Kenzie Highway converge in this high-altitude landscape where the volcanic history of the Cascades is prominently mapped. The terrain is defined by a dense concentration of volcanic peaks and craters, from the sharp profile of Three Fingered Jack and Mt Washington to the broad forms of Belknap Crater and Nash Crater. At Santiam Junction, the transition between the Willamette National Forest and Deschutes National Forest is clear, with the highway corridor supporting mid-century recreational infrastructure like the Hoodoo Ski Bowl and Hogg Rock Ski Bowl. Traces of earlier mountain passage are visible in the Old Railroad Grade and the Cache Creek Toll Station near the eastern edge. Dozens of small alpine lakes, including Duffy Lake and Santiam Lake, dot the high basins, while the Dee Wright Observatory stands at McKenzie Pass, offering a primary vantage point over the extensive lava fields.
