The southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore is a intricate landscape of maritime forest and salt marshes, defined by the narrow corridor of U.S. Route 13 and its proximity to the Atlantic and Chesapeake. Small coastal hamlets like Townsend and Capeville sit inland from the expansive wetlands of Beach Marsh and Magothy Bay. On the western edge, the coastline is dominated by the prominent bluffs at Butlers Bluff and the recreational area of Kiptopeke Beach.
